Robbie
Side Note: An deep, intimate portrait of a boy I knew, but never met. Excellently executed.
the green shack of a house
behind the house of the rising sun
was Robbie’s place
lazy dog on the floor
anger thick in the air
poverty painted on the walls
generic cuisines odorizing
loudly stained 70’s couch cushions
his dad went AWOL years ago
his mom’s strung out in her room
the house smelled funny
it reeked of dysfunctional,
unkempt lives
the disheveled life of a downtrodden kid
twelve year old self-parenting
we were born on the same day,
in the same year,
only a few hours apart
huh…
my dad drove by at midnight
while we sat on his front steps
I knew that look.
I grabbed my shit
and jumped in the truck
I never did have a sleepover
wih Robbie
